Let’s pack the UCF Arena on Saturday

Sure we’re all sad about losing Wednesday to UAB, but we’ve got to push that past us because we’ve got another huge game this Saturday versus Houston who is tied for 2nd in C-USA. It will be another tough test but I have a good feeling this team is going to be ready for it.

For the football fans out there, you have a big reason to come out as well even if you don’t like basketball. This is a huge game as 4 star recruit Brandon Harris will be at the game as part of his official visit. This is the #3 rated cornerback in the NATION! He has us in his top 5 along with Miami, Ohio St, Florida, and LSU. Not bad company, so let’s get out there and pack the Arena and beat Houston!

More on the success of the Liberty Bowl

Looks like the Liberty Bowl was not only a success in the stands and on TV but also in the city of Memphis! Check out these five great quotes from a Commercial Appeal article in Memphis. This is great for UCF!

“But now, there’s more evidence — TV ratings and ribs — that the game,
which drew a crowd of 63,816, ranks as one of the most successful in
the 49-year history of the bowl.”

“And it certainly helped us that Orlando (home of UCF) is a big TV market.”

“Ehrhart also said that the influx of fans from both schools,
particularly from Mississippi State, generated $23 million into the
economy.”

“John Vergos, who runs The Rendezvous, said the day before the game and
then game day were the busiest days in the 60-year history of the
barbecue restaurant. Vergos said that on game day, the restaurant
served an all-time high 3,979 customers.”

“Vergos said he was surprised at the number of UCF fans that made the trip.”

UCF Athletics Creates YouTube Page

If you are a YouTube member you may want to subscribe to UCFAA’s videos. Hopefully we’ll see many great highlights from the remainder of the basketball season! I think this is a great idea on UCF’s part to make this happen. The right video could get a lot of play and it’s all free marketing!

Here’s a link to the UCFAA page and here’s “THE DUNK” from Jermaine Taylor against UTEP.

Great Ratings for Liberty Bowl

Of course that would have been a lot better for us had we won, or at least scored a TD. But hey exposure is exposure and I’d venture to guess that this game probably had more viewers than any other game we’ve ever played. Anytime we can get our name out there more it always helps, just like I’m sure Kevin’s chase of Barry’s record helped in viewership!

Over 3.9 Million households tuned into to watch the Liberty Bowl, making it ESPN’s 3rd highest watched bowl game of the entire bowl season. It also beat out games that were played on network TV such as the Sun Bowl which was on CBS but only 2.5 million tuned into watch USF get stomped by Oregon. It also edged the Cotton Bowl on Fox which matched Missouri vs Arkansas, beating it by a very slim 10,000 viewers. All in all, great news for UCF football!

Here are all the ratings from the bowls.

UCF tears apart UTEP!

UCF beat UTEP 109 - 80! Yes that is not a typo. UCF scores over 100 for the first time since 2004 and UTEP gives up the most points in over 40 years! Just an amazing night, this team as the makings of something pretty special. I’m sure we’ll have some bumps down the road but right now things are looking good.

On the bad side Stanly Billings got injured and according to Kirk in the postgame it’s not good. Looks like he’ll be out for at least the next few games, not good news considering we have some big games against UAB and Houston coming up. Stanley has been playing at a whole new level over the past 3-4 games so this is really unfortunate for not only the team, but for Stanley himself. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks.

Back on the positive side Jermaine Taylor put in his nomination for dunk of the year by posterizing not one but TWO UTEP players on a single dunk. Couldn’t have happened without the great alley oop pass from MOD. Sorry guys no pics for videos this time, but instead I’ve got stats for you!

Team FG: 70.2%
3-pt FG: 64.7%
Dave & Tony FG: 100% (13 for 13!)
MOD & Jermaine FG: 78.8% (15 for 19)

Great job Knights, let’s get a big crowd for UAB next Wednesday!

View highlights of UCF win over ECU

I’ve gotta admit I’m impressed with how many UCF highlights there are in a video review package from a ECU site. That’s pretty good unbiased reporting…

Looks like Taylor was a beast this game. Also impressed by the comments from the ECU coach.

New UCF Apparel Online Shop

Got an email from someone at KnightOutfitters.com this weekend. They are a new online merchandise store selling officially licensed UCF apparel. I’m not affiliated with them in any way but wanted to point it out because I think the more companies and choices we have for UCF apparel the better. You’ll see their link on the right column under Apparel along with the other great online store UCFShirts.com, home of the infamous & banned K. Smith is my homeboy t-shirt!

Check them out, they have some cool stuff. I especially this shirt:

National Respect for USF/UCF game

This is why we should be continuing this series beyond this year when the contract expires. This shows that the country is starting to take notice into this “rivalry” it’s too bad it may end this year…

NBC Sports listed the USF at UCF game as one of the Top 25 non-conference matchups of 2008! We are in the company of games like Miami at Florida, Ohio St at USC, and Auburn at West Virginia. Here is what they had to say about the USF/UCF game:

22. South Florida at Central Florida — Sept. 6

The Golden Knights and Kevin Smith were held without a touchdown in a 10-3 Liberty Bowl loss to Mississippi State 10-3. Afterward Smith, the nation’s leading rusher, said that everyone back in Orlando was disappointed, even “the sheriff’s department”. How much more disappointed are they now that Smith has opted to forgo his senior season — and a shot at the NCAA career rushing yardage record–in favor of the NFL draft? USF defensive end George Selvie, who finished second in the nation in sacks with 14.5 in ‘07, is already haunting George O’Leary’s dreams

Not bad not bad, it will be interesting to see what TV channel picks up the game.

Preview of ECU BB game from ECU paper

Here is a good preview of tonight’s UCF vs ECU basketball game from the Greenville, NC paper. The ECU coach really gives UCF some major props. However this is likely going to be the toughest ECU team we’ve faced since joining the league. Our 7-0 winning streak over ECU will definitely be challenged tonight, but I think our boys can do it!

I’d point you to the Orlando Sentinel preview, but it’s only a little blurb in the paper nothing even online. Gotta love the local paper, sigh.

Here’s a cool Spirit Splash 2007 Video

Found this on the rivals site. Cool time lapse of the event…
